6 Ways To Keep The Skin From Looking Dull This Winter

Writer: Shalini NadkarniShalini Nadkarni

Do you feel your skin becoming dull and dry every winter? Stretched skin in the morning (and sometimes throughout the day), appearance of fine lines, chapped lips and dullness make you slap bottles of oils and petroleum jelly all over your face. Yet, it doesn’t seem to be enough. So, what do you do?

Know that these are signs of your skin’s barrier being compromised. The low humidity in the air, icy winds, indoor heating- all of it contributes to this condition. All those long, hot, steaming showers don’t help either. In fact, they end up depleting the skin of its natural moisture.

But, fret not, as there are a lot of practical ways you can keep your skin healthy and thriving in the colder months! Although, do remember that it’s not just one thing or the other that will help. It is in fact a combination of these which will help get you the much coveted peachy glow and make you enjoy the weather more! Here are some of our favorite ways to keep our skin plump and peachy:

1. Layering

Our skin care needs to change according to the seasons, especially if you live in places which experience extreme temperatures.

A moisturizer worn in warm summer might not suffice in the harsh cold winter. Winter needs more layering and pampering. However, you can simply make alterations without making too many changes to the skin care routine.

During winter, include slightly richer formulations that will provide the skin with an extra barrier against the cold. So, you could wear your serums and SPF but do add a heavier moisturizer to the routine

2. Don’t Neglect Your Nighttime Routine

One huge reason for the skin feeling dry in the morning is the use of room heating. Since your skin is exposed to eight uninterrupted hours of low humidity air, layering at night is a must at night as well. A typical night skin routine will consist of a serum, a heavy night cream and a facial oil to lock in moisture.

Having a humidifier in the bedroom is also great to help rebalance the humidity and maintain hydration. You may add a cream based night mask two times a week for added nourishment.

3. Book In

Winter is a really great time to try our Deep Hydrating and Regernating treatments. These work well for stimulation of collagen and elastin and improved skin texture. For general skin health and winter skin that needs some extra TLC, you could try out our Radiance brightening treatment.

Or, you might as well leave it to us to design you a customized Thea Signature facial. It’s a fantastic all-rounder that deeply nourishes your skin, includes light extractions, exfoliation, vitamin infusion and LED light therapy too. It’s a great skin reset.

4. Massage More

When we are cold, our blood vessels constrict to keep in vital heat but it can lead to us looking a little lackluster and pasty. So, it’s a good idea to stimulate some all-important circulation every so often. A facial massage is a great way to do that!

Try and take 15 minutes a couple of times a week to really massage and treat your skin. Fast upwards movements and soft tapping and pinching are fantastic ways to get the blood flow going. Or, go up a level and incorporate a gua sha tool.

5. Turn Down The Heat

High temperatures strip the skin of its natural oils and compromise the skin barrier too. We know everyone likes to feel cozy at this time of year. However, try limiting the temperature on your baths and showers. A good way to know if the water is too hot is to run your wrist under the tap or shower. If it flushes red, it’s too hot.

6. Incorporate Oils

Our skin barrier is made up of fats and essential fatty acids, which can be found in high quality, plant sourced oils. If your skin is feeling scaly and tight, a rich oil can work wonders, making it feel supple again. It can help to restore the barrier function. If your skin is oily, look for low molecular weight oils like jojoba and grapeseed oil. If you need more nourishment, macadamia and argan are great options.

A great way to keep the body hydrated is to use bath oils after showering on your wet body and wiping it off with a towel.

We hope our suggestions help you to enjoy the cold while it lasts!
