A very good reason could be the accumulation of dead skin. This piles up over a period of time and with age our natural process to shed skin slows down.
At this stage, I know of many who resort to all sorts of scrubs and other D-I-Ys at home. While they give a scrubbed clean look.. that's about all they do. The dead skin is glued to the skin which cannot be easily scrubbed off.
That's where professional exfoliation comes in. The acidic nature of peels detaches the dead skin and loosens it up and allows removal, at the same time creates an environment unfriendly to bacteria plus if these peels are fruit based they further provide nourishment to the skin.
Skin friendly peels like Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHA) are well researched fruit and plant based peels. Enzymatic peels are even more so. They are mild with little or no downtime and help with dead skin removal. AHAs like glycolic, lactic, malic, and mandelic are used depending on skin type and even their blends are known to help with acne, pigmentation, fine lines and dullness of skin. I absolutely love and prefer to use them on my clients. These are perfect for a lunch hour peel!
Online options can be tempting but stay away as much as possible. They may not suit your skin (and could result in redness, sensitivity and flaky skin). You don’t want to mess with your face.
While there's enough information online, it would help to get some sound personal advice. Consult a professional who’d be able to guide you basis your skin’s requirement, condition and post care needs!
