What do serums really help with? How important are they in your home care skin routine?

Writer: Shalini NadkarniShalini Nadkarni

What you use at home daily has a huge role to play in maintaining your skin health. Daily use of antioxidant rich serums boosts skin nourishment.

Serums are made of active ingredients that are small in molecular size which aids penetration and encourages cell renewal. These are primarily vitamins also called antioxidants which help fight free radicals. Therefore prevent loss of collagen, slow down signs of ageing and control acne.

That said, serums on their own cannot help. Remember when I told you that dead skin reemerges every 28 days? This is the reason why monthly sessions of exfoliation and extractions are important. Regular professional exfoliation will assist the serums to work into the skin and not just sit on top of dead skin.

When buying a serum look out for ingredients instead of popular brands. Most vital and effective serums are based with Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Retinol or Hyaluronic acid. These are safest to start with. There are peptides and Niacinamide and others too. Go with what works and suits your skin.

Serums can be used as early as in your 20s to slow down the aging process, improve skin quality and its health. That would be my answer to “when is a good time to start using serums?” If you wake up at the first signs of ageing then there is more hard work involved.

Serums are great not only for anti aging purposes but also to fight acne, dry skin and dullness. It's more like an added TLC to your skin especially when our skins are exposed to extreme temperatures and pollution. Do remember to follow it up with a moisturizer.
